The following letter highlights the kinds of details we’d like to see in your proposal.
To the Editor:
I plan to write a feature-length article about Bovine Tuberculosis (BTB) in South Africa’s Kruger National Park. Researchers first detected BTB in Kruger in 1990, and now nearly half the Cape buffalo herds and many predators are infected.
There is a heavy Berkeley involvement in Kruger BTB research. For example, Wayne M. Getz in the College of Natural Resources and his students have developed statistical models to try and assess possible management plans for the epidemic, which range from killing all infected buffalo to building a giant fence across the New Jersey-sized park.
The article will be informed by interviews with Getz and his graduate students, and also by quotes from Kruger park veterinarians (with whom I am in email contact). I’ve also collected background information from articles in Kudu (KNP’s research journal).
I am a second year graduate student in ESPM and, although I have not written a feature length article before, I did write a short piece for my department’s newsletter last year. I have attached a copy for your review.
Please let me know what you think of the idea and if you have any suggestions. I’d like to get a draft in by March 1st.
