A Time to Kilo: The Atomic Interferometer

In “A Time to Kilo”, BSR writer Anna Lieb describes how new technology is being used to redefine the kilogram in terms of fundamental physical constants. In this visualization, we show the basic idea behind an experiment that UC Berkeley Professor Holger Müller and his lab performs to calculate the mass of a Cesium particle from its frequency and Planck’s constant.
